Colourpop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks Review | Chilly Chili, Bumble, Solow

I always wondered why Colourpop used a "U" in their name. I read online they added a "U" because it's less boring and more unique. Hahaha, Colourpop made me appreciate them even more just because of that. With their low costs and dependable products, they have me hooked.

When the Ultra Matte Liquid lipsticks first released I was dying to try them but everything was instantly picked over. I ended up waiting a long time to try them because I was constantly adding other things to my list. But when I saw the new shades they added for fall I knew now was the time to get on the Colourpop trend. I actually wanted Bad Habit (new/LE) but it sold out before I had the chance. I went with Chilly Chili (new/LE) instead.

The Ultra Matte Liquid lipsticks sell for $6 each and they come with .11 ounces. The tube is plastic but looks expensive rather than cheap. The applicator is a standard doe foot that picks up product easily. You can buy them on Colourpop's website. Colourpop is an American brand based out of C.A.

Solow-Permanent

Solow is described as a neutral nude pink with warm undertones and a matte finish. On me it looks exactly how It was described and swatched on Colourpops website.  The application is easy but it can be hard if you like to work slow. It dried fairly quick and didn't budge once it was completely matte. One thing that bugged me about this lipstick is it crumbles. If I rub my lips together small crumbs will form on my lips. But that only happens if I try to do it. The only time I noticed any transfer was when I was eating a taco that was a little greasy. It did stay on all day though, until I went to bed, which at that point I just removed it with coconut oil. I would suggest picking this shade if you're just diving into the liquid lipstick vendetta. It's wearable and the formula is nice.

Bumble-Permanent

Bumble is a dusty warm terracotta with warm undertones and a matte finish.  This is my favorite out of the three shades I purchased (because of the color). It does apply smoothly but sets quickly and tends to flake if you apply too much or in layers. It did dry my lips out over time just like both of the other liquid lipsticks. It also wore just as long and only faded a little bit on the inner corner.

Chilly Chili-Limited Edition

Chilly Chili is a muted plummy brown with warm undertones and a semi matte finish. It didn't dry down completely like the other matte liquid lipsticks from Colourpop. This is an intense shade and It looks really dark on fair skin. It does apply evenly and smoothly. I kind of like that it's semi matte since it allows more time to finish applying before drying down. Sometimes more time is needed to apply darker shades because more precision is required. Chilly Chili did transfer a little more since it didn't dry down completely but it did last just as long as the others mainly because it's darker. It felt somewhat drying but not as drying since it's not ultra matte. I can get around 6 hours out of it with regular eating and drinking.

Overall
The finish of each lipstick is matte with absolutely no moisture levels (except for Chilly Chili). They do dry my lips out some but not to the point where they aggravate me. When applied it's best to work quickly or the lipstick will dry before you're done and they do not work well when layered. It takes anywhere between 30 seconds to a couple minutes to dry to a complete matte finish. Once dry they do not transfer unless you're eating greasy or wet foods. The lipstick won't breakup from the food but it will make it a little moist and transfer because of that. However, it will dry back down. The wear time is around 8 hours even with drinking and eating. I tried reapplying the shades but they tend to crumble when I do that. They also crumble if I rub my lips together in sweeping motions with pressure. The pigment will still remain on my lips but I do notice crumbs on my lips. However, if a thin layer is applied at the initial application this won't happen. Nonetheless, I really do like the Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks by Colourpop. I feel like there are unique shades and the price is right as well as the formula. I would recommend it to anyone who loves matte lipsticks and doesn't mind a drying formula  (that's just how liquid lipsticks are).

Photos and Swatches

Warning: These liquid lipstick are literally liquid. They do spill out of the tube. When I first swatched one it spilled directly onto my pants, went through them and got on my leg. My leg was still stained a day later and my pants will forever have Chilly Chili on them.

Chit Chat Wednesday | Do you like matte lipstick?

Do you like matte lipstick?

Recently I did a poll on my blog and 60% of you said you prefer satin lipstick over matte. Frankly, I was surprised since matte is such a popular finish in the beauty industry. Every brand out there is releasing new matte formulas since it's so popular. But I do understand why a lot of your are not jumping on the band wagon.

I personally prefer matte lipstick because I like the finish on me. I think they're easier to pull off unless the shade is bright or odd. The only thing I don't like is the moisture level. They tend to dry out my lips sometimes but I can easily fix that with a thin layer of chap stick before application.

My favorite quality about matte lipsticks is the transfer proof wear. I love how I can kiss my boyfriend without giving him pink lips. It's also reassuring to beable to wear a dark lip without worrying about bleeding or smearing.

How To Tell If A Beauty Blogger/Vlogger is Honest

The point of being a beauty blogger or vlogger is to help women find makeup that works, or to teach makeup skills. It's easy to come across great makeup tutorials but recently, it's growing harder to find dependable reviews.

That's why I'm writing this post. To help you figure out if a beauty guru is genuine and honest. Granted, you won't be able to tell every time if your favorite vlogger is lying to your face but this should help most of the time.

Here's a list of the "tale-tale" signs I have noticed over the years.

The best way to recognize a dishonest guru is by their reviews.

The reviewer doesn't have many specific details about the product

Speaking from experience, when a product is being reviewed it goes through a trial area. When being tested, all of the qualities are learned and memorized. If a reviewer doesn't seem to know what to say, then it's likely they didn't thoroughly test the product. Now this doesn't necessarily mean the person is lying but they're not being honest about its performance. Any blogger or vlogger should know every good and bad thing about the product they are reviewing.

If they're just saying stuff like- Yeah, it's a pretty color and it lasted all day on me without disappearing on my lips. The packaging is pretty, too. Oh, and I got it for $15 and it's my new holy grail.- then chances are they are not telling the full truth.

Someone who really tested the product would say something like- Th lipstick is pigmented with one swipe but the coverage is more even with two. When I applied the second layer I didn't notice any streaking. The formula is matte but not drying like liquid lipsticks are known to be. The wear time is any where between 4 to 7 hours, depending on how often you eat and drink. It does transfer a little but stops after the first time. And so on..

The more details, the more likely the reviewer is being honest.

They talk about it once, then it's history.

We've heard it before, the new foundation is, so and so's, new holy grail. But yet, they never mention it again. If they only talk about it once but it permanently gets lost 30 videos back, then, yeah, they're lying. Good products don't just get forgotten.

Everyone else says it sucks.

Majority rules. If everyone says it sucks but just a couple say it's really good, then... A. The beauty guru is lying. Or, B. That product just happened to work for a very small group of people, but that's unlikely.

It should be a red flag if there's a reviewer who stands by a product but it's a bad one. Check and see if the product was sent to them for sponsorship.

The reviews on the products website are poor

Go to the website for the brand of the product and check the review. If everyone hates it but the beauty guru you just watched happened to love it, then I bet they are indeed lying.

The review sounds like a commercial

If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

The best way to tell if it's actually a good product is to watch or read a couple other reviews. If everyone says it's good and they're not sponsored, then it may just be good.

The video or post is sponsored

Beauty bloggers/vloggers lie to get paid or to recieve free products. It's business but it's unfair to all of you.  Always check for sponsorship before believing a review from any blogger/vlogger.

One vlogger I trust is Emily Noel (just like someone else said in yesterdays post). She is very honest with her reviews and she's not affraid of making a company mad about reviewing one of their crappy products. She'll even bash a product in a sponsored post if it's necessary.

What's the best way to get a honest review? I hate to say this because I'm a beauty blogger, but I'll say it anyways for your sake. The best way to get a honest review is on the products website. Consumers are almost always honest about the product they purchase. And sometimes, it's nice to see multiple reviews.

For example, it's can be hard to pick out a foundation based off of one review. When I look for one, I go through the products reviews  and look for people with acne because I need to know if it has good coverage. A beauty guru with great skin isn't going to like the same foundation as me.

I would like to let everyone know that my reviews will always be honest. I can't be bought out and I'm not interested in turning my blog into a joke. It's important to me to keep my reviews truthful, even when I'm sent a product from a company I love. Honesty is something we should value as beauty bloggers. I started out as a genuine blogger and I will continue to be so until my last post!
