Treating Weak Nails: Cracking and Splitting

Hey, guys! So today I got an email asking if I know anything that will keep nails from splitting. I emailed the person back with my tips and I felt really good about personally helping someone. But then I thought to myself-shouldn't I help every one of my readers? So now I'm here sharing the same tips with everyone who needs help treating their nails.

First, I would stop using any form of nail polish (hardening included). They contain harsh chemicals that will make your nails brittle later on. All they do is strip your nails of their natural oils, which just means your nails will be dry and cause complications. The only thing you want to apply to your nail bed is moisturizer/ oils!

Speaking of moisturizing! After you shower, wash your hands, whenever, always put oil on your nails afterwards. If moisturizing after washing isn't enough purchase hand gloves for night time. Put a lot of moisturizer on your hands at night and add some oil to your nails, slip the gloves on and when you wake up take them off. Everything should be heavily moisturized. Try it for a few days and notice the difference (works on feet too!).

Be sure to use gloves when doing household chores. Those chemicals can harm your nails by stripping the oils, just like body soaps.

Don't use your nails when they are wet. This leads to cracking and chipping because they're weak from the moisture.

However, the best time to clip them is when their wet (after showering would be a good time). The pressure of clipping can sometimes cause your nails to crack but when their wet the pressure isn't as severe. Use a good clipper, not one that's dull. Filing your nails also helps smooth/ prevent cracks.

The most important factor is your diet. Be sure to eat plenty of vegetables and fruits. I know this tip kind of sucks but it's the honest truth. It all starts from the inside of your body, nail health included. Be sure to included supplements that are targeted towards nail health. They can really help a lot!

Lastly, if all else fails...Go see your doctor. Some diseases can affect nail health (anemia & thyroid problems).
