General Rules: If it has a bad smell toss it!
If it's liquid and separating then it's best to discard it.
If it's completely shattered the trash bin is its new home.
Eyeshadow
The general rule for eyeshadow is 2 years. Most people think it's gross if that rule is broken but who wants to purchase new palettes every two years? If I spend $50+ on a high end palette you best believe I'm going to use that baby till it's gone! Come on, I know I can't be the only one. And for my limited edition palettes, I'm NEVER going to toss those in the bin. Especially my Lorac Mega Pro palette. It's far too valuable and it deserves more than a two year life. I honestly think it's ok to use eyeshadow longer. Just be sanitary and clean them every once in a while with alcohol. If the eyeshadow is a cream, then throw it out when it either dries up or when it's doubled the recommended discarding date. (Ex. Reads 12 months, then throw out at 24 months) It should be fine for longer use.
Primers
On the back of primers they usually say around 12 months but most of the time their used up before then anyways. If not, I would say 18 months is probably fine if you follow the general rule above.
Foundation
Who uses foundation after a 12 month period? I do! As long as if it's packaged in a squeeze tube or a bottle with a pump. An open bottle may need to be thrown away between 12-18 months. Unless it was only used a couple times and left tightly shut. If that's the case, again, follow the general rule above.
Concealer
If it's a squeeze tube then It should be fine until it's either gone, starting to smell, or separating. If it's in a pot, pan or stick tube then throw it away by the recommended time period on the package. Concealer is used for imperfections and they'll cause them too if their old and contaminated. Use your best judgement when it comes to concealer.
Powder
This applies to all powders: foundation powder, blush, bronzer, etc. Really they should be thrown according to the date on the back. However, they can be kept longer if they're cleaned frequently. Just spray some rubbing alcohol on them and keep the powder sanitary. Just don't take it too far and use a powder that is half a decade old. Another important factor is clean brushes. They'll contaminate anything and everything!
Mascara
This is pretty obvious. I think it's best to toss it after 4 months(recommended). Mascara dries out after a few months anyways and they are easily contaminated. If you're infected with pink eye then replace your mascara immediately. That would definitely be considered taking it too far.
Liner
Stick liner? Finish it until it's gone. Gel liner? Use it till the pot starts too dry out. (Usually happens within a year) Liquid liner? Every single drop is fine to use even 2 years later and if it lasts that long let me know. That's one hell of a liquid liner!
Lipstick
Stinky? Toss it out! If it's older than your grandmas car then throw it away. If it was used close to or during a cold sore dispose of it.
Lipgloss
12 months is recommended but I use mine for a couple years. Just smell it and make sure it still smells fine.
When do you throw out your makeup?
